Project Description:
In this project, the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc., will
expand its already-successful Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)
by incorporating locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables into its senior
dining site and home delivered meals programs. Through the SFMNP, the Area
Office on Aging provides coupons to low-income older adults so they may purchase
fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. This project will provide
funding to the Area Office on Aging so that senior nutrition providers can
purchase locally-grown fruits and vegetables, which will use this produce in the
meals they provide to seniors. As such, local seniors will have additional
opportunities to consume fresh, locally-produced foods, while area farmers will
enjoy an expanded market for their goods. Additionally, the Area Office on
Aging will cultivate a relationship with area farmers that will lead to further
collaboration in the future. Project organizers believe that this program can
be transferred to other government-funded nutrition programs, such as school
food service.
