Project Description

In this project, the Countryside Conservancy, with partners Baughman Township, Wayne Economic Development Council, and Wayne Soil and Water Conservation District, will establish a manure bartering program in Baughman Township.  While the Township has a very strong agriculture sector, with a number of livestock operations, it suffers from poor manure management.  During a comprehensive planning process two years ago, a number of communities members expressed concerns about transporting and trading manure, as well as water pollution related to manure.  Township trustees believe that this project will address these concerns.  Further, the manure management model developed can serve as a model throughout Ohio.

M.A.N.U.R.E. will survey producers and consumers to obtain data and public perception of manure issues, offer reduced-cost soil sampling and manure analysis to participants, partner with Wayne Soil and Water to educate producers and landowners on participating in a bartering program.  Project organizers will use outside resources to educate community members on successful manure bartering programs in other states.  Most importantly, the program will create model contracts to facilitate formal bartering agreements.

M.A.N.U.R.E. is jointly funded by the Center for Farmland Policy Innovation and the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Rural Rehabilitation Grant Program.
